Hello Blogosophere!

I am currently in the process of setting up our first podcast for myself and my class. However I am calling on all bloggers especially students and educators to give their opinion on something so I can use it for a little background research for the upcoming podcast.

Here are the questions ( be as honest as you can):

  1. As a student, how do you feel about being in or going to school?
  2. What would you find interesting or useful to learn about? Explain.
  3. Do you care about what you are learning now? Explain.

These are the three main questions I’m looking for answers on. Please let me know if you don’t understand the questions or there is a way I can state them more clearly. Educators, I invite you to answer these questions as well because I am interested in a wide variety of opinions.

Question 1: I think that coming to school is okay because what would I do at home when ever there is no school, and I think that if I work hard to coming at school would give me more oppertunities for when I am an adult.

Question 2: Since I am not in highschool yet, I think that what we learn in grade eight is okay for now, and next year we have more of a choice.

Question 3: I care what we are learning now, because I think that I am learning important classes that we need when we go to high school.

1: School is incredibly boring almost all the time. There are a few teachers subjects and lessons that make school interesting though. However, as boring as it is it is ABSOLUTELY neccesary to go, as you need to get a good education to succeed in life. Until you get to college school doesn’t really teach you much of what you need to know, it does, on the other hand, teach you how to learn so that you will be more efficient in college.

2: Anything that relates to actual life is useful to learn, but not neccecarily interesting. For example, I can’t stand math, but I am good at it and I pay attention because it’s something that everyone who wants to be even remotely succesful needs to know. The subjects I find interesting aren’t really taught much in 8th grade, which is dissapointing. The subjects I am most interested in are Literature and Politics. I also enjoy debating, but I’m not sure if that qualifies as a subject.

3. I care about some of what we are learning now. I care about what actually matters. What I don’t care about is standerdised test prep for the “No Child Gets Ahead” (sorry, I mean “No Child Left Behind”) Program. I do think that it is important to help the less gifted children, but I think it is more important to help and challenge the ones that are gifted.

I hope to see some more answers to these questions later, I want to know what other people think. Please check out my blog and comment, and I will comment on yours.

Hey Nick!

You certainly left some very articulate answers to the questions above. You certainly have thought this question through. I am interested in your comment that “…school doesn’t really teach you much of what you need to know.” Can you be more specific?

What parts of schooling would you consider important?

I think you hit the nail on the head with the comment, that school does teach you how to learn and that is an important part of becoming more successful in school and a future career.

If you were in charge Nick, how would you reorganize the school system to meet the needs of the student?

1. Being in school changes one’s perspective about life in general. You learn most of the basic knowledge (at first) one requires to carry on. What you absorb depends upon your life at home, your friends, your teachers , the curriculum, and the school staff. You learn core values of what is right and what is wrong. Attitude plays a big part of learning.

2. School and learning are an integral part of life. Learning things from the basics to the most sophisticated knowledge requires practical and formal ways to attain higher form of education. Remember that some parts of the regular curriculum are not interesting to all students BUT these could be useful later on.

3. Responsibility must be everyones. There’s just no perfect educational system in this world. What is most important to one’s culture might not be the priority of another country. Your future depends upon your attitude and how you want to attain a productive life.

I think crystal82, samantha83, Amelia86 shows maturity and has the right attitude for future success. Good luck Crystal, Amelia and Samantha. Keep on going.
