Today at our school we are commemorating Terry Fox by participating in the annual Terry Fox Run. Terry was a person who had lost his leg to cancer when he was a younger man. While this would have devastated most people, Terry never stopped being athletic. He began to take up running and decided that he wanted to raise awareness about cancer. Terry planned to run across Canada to raise money to help find a cure for cancer. Terry would run a marathon a day until he completed his journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

At first, no one knew much about what this lone person at the side of the highway was doing running all this way. However, the story of Terry’s efforts spread and soon he had others who had taken up his cause. Thanks to Terry’s courage and determination, he was able to inspire others to donate to his cause.

Unfortunately, the cancer returned to his body and he was forced to stop his run around Thunder Bay, Ontario. He passed away not too long after that. Terry raised awareness of cancer and he taught us that everyone can make a difference in the fight against this disease. Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope was able to raise millions of dollars. He is a true Canadian hero.
